The Digital Binary vs. The Human Spectrum
In May 2026, I gave a presentation to my company's LGBTQIA+ Committee to illustrate that AI, built on a digital binary, struggles to understand the spectrum of LGBTQIA+ identities.
As "mirrors" of human data, LLMs inherit biases and gaps training datasets. We briefly explored how this bias is "baked in" during collection and labeling, often leading to the erasure of non-binary and other queer people. Understanding this mirror effect is key, as the bias creates real-world impacts in areas like healthcare and online safety.
The call to action is clear: advocate for inclusive AI by ensuring the data reflects the complexity of humanity. Although my presentation specifically addresses this demographic, the concepts apply to multiple communities, and it's vital for users of AI to understand the bias in output.
